What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a pastoral relationship between the spiritual director and the directee with a particular focus on the directee’s relationship with God in everyday life. It is a companionship that assists the directee in pursuing greater awareness of and attentiveness to the Lord’s Presence by learning to hear His Voice.

I meet with individuals one on one in my “space” at Christ the King Vineyard Church or at a distance via FaceTime or Zoom. Most sessions are monthly (with the exception of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, which are weekly) and are approximately one hour in length. We begin with a few minutes of small talk, followed by some dedicated time of centering (usually with a spiritual practice to assist you) allowing time for silence and quiet prayer. Then we move into conversation.

Carolyn Herbert is a spiritual director, author, speaker/teacher. She has dedicated her life to influencing others in their journey toward deeper intimacy with the Trinity. She is also trained to accompany individuals through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.

Carolyn’s previous life experience includes twenty years on staff at Cornerstone Pregnancy Resource Center, with the last seven years as Executive Director. She now serves the Lord as associate staff and Elder at Christ the King Vineyard Church in North Olmsted, Ohio.

Carolyn is a single mom with 5 married children, 15 beautiful grands, and 24 (and counting) amazing great-grands. She achieved M.Div and DMin degrees from Ashland Theological Seminary in order to know and bring forth God’s Word with greater accuracy and passion.

To that end, her book “Traveling Through Menopause: What’s God Got To Do With It?” is a product of her doctoral dissertation. Surprisingly, Scripture has much to contribute toward understanding the spiritual struggles of this season.

Couched in personal stories and laced with humor, Carolyn includes the physical and emotional changes women experience; but primarily focuses on understanding the little discussed spiritual symptoms…and their causes.

She then points the reader to establishing a new purpose for getting out of bed each morning and leaning into a new tomorrow.
